What If? Binti Jua
Binti is most well known for an incident which occurred on August 16, 1996, when a three-year-old boy climbed the wall around her zoo enclosure and fell 20 feet, rendering him unconscious. Binti immediately rushed to the boy’s side and shielded him from other curious gorillas before carrying him to the access point of her enclosure so that zoo personnel could attend to him. Her own 17-month-old baby, Koola, clutched her back throughout the incident. The boy spent four days in the hospital and recovered fully.
